Ship chartering and shipbroking

Ship chartering and shipbroking

A vessel for cargo that does not fit in containers

Some cargoes are too large or too heavy for containers: bulk goods, steel, machinery or a whole project. For these, we look for a vessel, or part of one, through shipbrokers and owners, compare the offers, explain the charter terms before you sign and coordinate the loading, the customs clearance and the ports in Tunisia. One contact, from the first enquiry to the discharge.

What we take care of

  • Cargo, ports and dates checked
  • Vessels sought through brokers and owners
  • Offers compared for you
  • Charter terms explained before signing
  • Loading and discharge coordinated
  • Customs clearance in Tunisia

Questions about ship chartering

What is the difference between a charter and a container booking?

With a container, you buy space on a ship that sails on a fixed line. With a charter, you hire a whole vessel, or part of one, for your cargo, on your ports and dates. Chartering suits large quantities of one cargo.

In a voyage charter you pay for one trip between two ports; in a time charter you hire the vessel for a period. Most one-off cargoes go on a voyage charter. We explain the option that fits your cargo.

Laytime is the time the charter allows to load and discharge. When it runs out, demurrage is due to the owner for every extra day. Well-prepared ports and documents keep it low. See Demurrage and detention: how to avoid them.

The cargo and its quantity, how it is packed, the ports of loading and discharge and the dates you can load. With that, we come back with the vessels available and their terms.

How a charter comes together

You tell us the cargo, the quantity, the ports and the dates. We send the enquiry to shipbrokers and owners, compare the vessels offered, their price and their terms, and recommend one. When you agree, the charter is signed and we prepare the ports, the documents and the customs clearance in Tunisia.

For goods that fit in containers, a regular line is usually cheaper and simpler: see our sea freight. We tell you which suits your cargo.
